By now you may have heard that SNAP or “food stamps” will be temporarily paused beginning November 1st . This is a devastating development for people who rely on food assistance to fill their plates, including 224,872 adults age 60+ in Michigan. This special blog post will outline where to find food assistance, food safety, and ways to support local food pantries and agencies who are likely operating at capacity. While we outline a variety of different food resources below, we also strongly recommend checking the Food Gatherers website. They have a great interactive map tool so you can find food resources in your area (you can even print a list by visiting this page).

Food Safety
In situations like this, it may be tempting to hoard food- especially canned goods. While canned goods can be an excellent addition to emergency food kits, it’s important to make sure that your canned food is stored and consumed safely. Here’s a link to an SRC blog post with food safety information. Unsure if something is safe to eat? Call the USDA’s Information Hotline at (202) 720-2791.
