Happy National Senior Citizens Day!

Happy National Senior Citizens Day! (1)

Each year on August 21st we set time aside to celebrate older adults and their contributions to society. When declaring Senior Citizens Day a holiday, President Reagan said: For all they have achieved throughout life and for all they continue to accomplish, we owe older citizens our thanks and a heartfelt salute. We can best demonstrate our gratitude and esteem by making sure that our communities are good places in which to mature and grow older.”

How seniors can celebrate

  • Visit your local senior center
  • Spend time with family or friends
  • Do something that brings you joy
  • Take a class in a topic that interests you (see this blog post for ideas)
  • Go shopping and enjoy some senior discounts (we’ve covered some on the blog before!)

How to celebrate seniors

  • Volunteer at a senior center
  • Call your older relatives to check in
  • Do your part to fight ageism. Here’s a great list of places to start from author and TED Talk speaker Ashton Applewhite
