Catholic Charities Washtenaw County is excited to introduce Seniors for Healthy Choices, a new six-week program that celebrates healthy aging and educates older adults on a variety of topics, including medication management, understanding the biological changes associated with aging, substance misuse, and simple tools to help participants feel more empowered about their healthcare. All participants will receive a Medication Toolkit that includes items to make it easier to take medication as prescribed, including a medication diary, a list of common medications and their side effects, and a medication bottle opener.

What does the training cover?

  • Understanding Changes Associated with Aging- Understand the myths and facts of aging, how to avoid risks of premature death, and learn about common mental health concerns.
  • Aging Sensitivity- Better understand the biological changes associated with aging, your own feelings about aging, and explore the advantages of getting older.
  • Valuing Cultural & Generational Differences- Explore concepts of culture and diversity, better understand diversity of older adults, and their unique needs
  • Medication & Older Adults- Increase awareness of medication use among older adults, identify behaviors that lead to substance misuse, learn medication management tips, and explore medications commonly used by older adults.
  • Substance Misuse, Addiction, & Older Adults- Understand addiction as a disease, identify the signs of alcohol misuse, explore the health risks and treatment options for addiction.
  • An Enhanced Quality of Life- Learn strategies for maintaining a healthy lifestyle, explore stress triggers, and learn about how our personal values influence how we think and act.

Why is this topic important?

According to the New Jersey Prevention Network, 81% of adults in America aged 65+ take at least one prescription medication each day. The more medications an individual takes, the greater the chance of medication misuse or adverse side effects.

Who’s eligible for the program?

This free, evidence-based program is open to anyone in Washtenaw County age 60 or older and offers six lessons over six weeks.
