Older adults face a number of unique challenges; unfortunately, these challenges are heightened for older adults that identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer). While Baby Boomers are more likely to live alone than their parents, members of the LGBT community are three times more likely than the general population to not have children to help with their care. They are also more likely to experience discrimination. LGBTQ individuals are more likely to feel isolated, which can lead to a host of health issues. Although there may be resources near them, the individual may decide not to use the resource if they don’t feel safe, if they feel like they will need to “come out” multiple times, or if they worry that their support person(s) won’t be welcomed.
