Since July is National Park and Recreation Month, we’ll be exploring how parks and recreation departments serve seniors and next week we’ll have an interview with a Senior Center that’s run by a local parks and recreation department.
What do Parks & Recreation Departments Do?
- Maintain local parks so everyone has access to safe green spaces.
- Rent out park pavilions and other facilities.
- Offer enrichment classes (e.g., cooking classes, exercise classes, etc.).
- Offer classes for all ages.
- Offer youth programs such as summer camp.
- Offer safety programs such as swimming lessons and Red Cross lifeguarding or babysitting.
- Offer sport leagues for adults.
- Provide art and cultural programs/events.
- Maintain a recreation center/community center if your city has one.
How do Parks & Recreation Support Seniors?
- According to a 2017 survey by the National Recreation and Park Association, 92% of Parks & Recreation Departments provide programming dedicated to older adults.
- In some areas, especially rural areas, the Parks and Recreation Department may be the only one providing programming for older adults.
- Offering senior-focused exercise classes.
- Offering arts and craft classes.
- Offering volunteer opportunities for older adults.
- Offering field trips and tours.
- Offering health classes, such as diabetes management or fall prevention.
- Providing a social outlet for older adults.
