Internet Resources for Seniors

Today (October 29th) is National Internet Day! It seems like each year more and more of our lives head online. While this is convenient, it leaves out individuals that may not have access to reliable internet connections or may not feel comfortable using new technology. Today’s blog post will explore different community resources to get you connected, feel secure in using your device, and enjoy spending time online.  

 

Computers 101  

  • AsKevin (734) 288-8338. In-home tech support that offers a variety of services aimed at older adults, such as setting up and understanding your technology and basic cybersecurity. Can also help with phones and smart devices.

    • 2nd Monday of the month from 9:00-11:00 am  
    • Open to MSHL members only  
  • Computer Classes @ Dexter District Library (734) 426-4477  
  • Computer Classes @ the Ypsilanti District Library.  
    • Group classes cover topics such as computer basics, using Zoom, and internet browsing. One-on-one sessions are available (must call ahead to schedule an appointment).

      • Whittaker Branch: (734) 482-4110, Ext. 1384  
  • Computer Help with Jack @ Pittsfield Township Senior Center (734) 822-2117  
    • Thursdays from 9:00-11:00 am (appointment needed). No cost but registration is required. Does not work on Apple products.  
  • Digital Connecting Corps. This collaboration with Eastern Michigan University provides a series of training courses on computer basics for older adults. Usually meet at the Ypsilanti and Ypsilanti Township senior centers. Call the senior centers for more information.   
  • One-on-One Technology Help @ Dexter District Library (734) 426-4477. No cost, but registration required. 
  • Tech Help @ Chelsea District Library (734) 475-8732. Offers drop-in help, or you can make an appointment for one-on-one assistance.   
  • Tech Help @ Milan Public Library (734) 439-1240. One-on-one help with computer basics. No cost, but registration required. 
  • Tech Lessons with Ben Cutler @ Saline Area Senior Center (734) 429-9274  
    • Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:30-4:45 pm. $5 per lesson. Registration required.  
  • Tech Town Hall @ Saline Area Senior Center (734) 429-9274  
    • Saline High School students help answer phone, tablet, and computer questions.   
    • Check the newsletter for days/times. No cost, but registration required. 
  • Technology Support @ Chelsea Senior Center (734) 475-9242  
    • Wednesdays 10:00am- noon  
    • Volunteers can help answer your computer and phone questions. No cost, but donations appreciated.

    • Smartphone 101: Covers basic phone components. Classes meet four times for one hour each. $65 participation fee.  
    • Smartphone 210: Covers how to get the most out of your phone, including using maps, camera, photo editing, and apps. Classes meet four times for one hour each. $65 participation fee. 
    • Smartphone 301: Covers notifications, ad blockers, passwords, bluetooth, and other advanced topics. Classes meet four times for one hour each. $65 participation fee. 
    • Smartphone Classes with James Giordani, MSW and Alli Spiller (of AsKevin). Call (734) 480-8362 or email [email protected] to register.  
    • Technology Mentors 1:1 Assistance. $10 fee per appointment (scholarships available). Call to set up an appointment.
