It’s estimated that over 301,000 adults in Michigan suffer from some form of gambling issue. According to the director of the Problem Gambling Center in Las Vegas, older adults are the fastest-growing population of gambling addicts. Why is this such a large issue for older adults? - Older adults don’t have as many years to make up the money lost
- Gambling on a regular basis (e.g., monthly) can lead to a higher chance of an addition. Older adults are likely to visit casinos more often via senior center trips.
Tips for Gambling Safely
- Set limits– both the amount of time you’ll spend gambling and how much money you’re willing to spend.
- Leave extra money and credit cards at home.
- Think of gambling as entertainment or a fun outing, not a way to make money.
- Take regular breaks.
- Gamble with others who share your viewpoint on gambling.
- Make sure you’re in the right mindset; don’t gamble if you’re depressed, upset, or angry.
- Always gamble sober.
