Family Caregivers Month: Patrick Dempsey

November is National Family Caregivers Month!

Patrick Dempsey and his siblings have famously stepped in to care for their mother when she was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer.

My mom, Amanda, is a seven-time ovarian-cancer survivor. One of the times she was going through treatment I realized that I had my sister Mary, who is a nurse, available to explain to me what was going on with our mother. Lots of people don’t have someone like that.

Mary Dempsey describes being a caregiver as a difficult, but rewarding time in her life:

“Being a caregiver is a full-time position. I would never let my hair down. Always available and on call to go as needed, with my phone by my side,” says Mary, who watched her mother handle multiple relapses with a mixture of pain and awe. “It was so difficult to hear and watch. Mom was very strong and fortunately taught me strength at an early age. Being able to watch her quickly recover and fight—one day at a time—to rise above cancer was so rewarding.”

Unfortunately, Amanda lost her battle with Ovarian Cancer. In response, her family created the Dempsey Center to support community members whose lives have been touched by cancer.
