In a Nursing Home? Know Your Rights!

ombudsman

October is Resident Right Month. Older adults deserve dignity as they age. The 1987 Nursing Home Reform Law ensured this by requiring nursing homes to “promote and protect the rights of each resident.” What does this mean? There are certain rights that nursing homes must adhere to if they accept Medicare and Medicaid, including:

  • The right to be treated with dignity and respect
  • The right to complain without repercussions
  • The right to handle your own money (or have it managed by someone of your choosing)
  • The right to be fully informed about your condition and treatment
  • Click here for a full listing of Resident Rights

What are your options if your rights are being infringed?

  • Submit a complaint
  • Contact your Long Term Care Ombudsman at (866) 485-9393
  • If you have unanswered questions about your care
  • If you have questions about your rights
  • If you want to learn more about long term care
