August marks many things, including the end of summer. Fall is around the corner and with it a variety of holidays, fall festivals, and opportunities to pick apples or pumpkins. Fall also means it’s time to prepare our homes and cars for colder weather. Today on the blog we’ll explore simple steps you can take to be prepared for fall and winter.
Outside the Home
- Bring in any outdoor furniture or invest in a weather-proof cover.
- Look at your gutters– are they clogged? Could they benefit from another cleaning before winter hits?
- Look at your property– are there trees that need to be trimmed? Does your lawn need any special treatment before it’s covered in snow?
- Don’t forget to turn off your sprinklers.
Inside the Home
- Reverse your fans to better circulate warm air.
- Make sure your thermostat is easy to read.
- Check for drafts by your windows and doors. You can buy DIY insulator kits like this one as a low-cost solution.
- Check the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
- Make sure your heater is in good working order.
- Change your furnace’s filter if needed (the county has a program that may be able to help you)
- Insulate your water lines.
Stay safe this fall and winter!
